should i practice Japanese phrases and grammar first or try learning Kanji instead?
As somebody who mostly self-studies Japanese, I would recommend learning Hiragana, first. Romaji will only slow you down because the language is written and read in kana not Romaji. The only use that find for it is keyboard input and that's it.
Then you start learning grammar, and slowly start using the Kanji and Katakana, but don't put off learning the Kanji. They are important when it comes to reading Japanese literature once you hit the elementary school level.
