should i practice Japanese phrases and grammar first or try learning Kanji instead? As somebody who mostly self-studies Japanese, I would recommend learning Hiragana, first. Romaji will only slow you down because the language is written and read in kana not Romaji. The only use that find for it is keyboard input and that's it. Then you start learning grammar, and slowly start using the Kanji and Katakana, but don't put off learning the Kanji. They are important when it comes to reading Japanese literature once you hit the elementary school level.

As a fellow Japanese language student I would suggest leaving kanji for a little while. Do move from using romaji to hiragana as quickly as possible though. Then you can gradually start introducing the kanji for the most common words, such as watashi, nihongo, ikimasu etc. Don't rely on romaji. Also I can see some errors in your Japanese but I will leave it for a native speaker to correct. Good luck with your studies.

Hi, I totally agree with the people who have already answered your question. Now, I'd like to correct your sentences: watashi wa "morteza" desu. --> Watashi wa "Morteza" desu. (*I don't know how to pronounce your name.) watashi wa nihongo no gakusei desu. (= I'm student majoring Japanese.) nihongo no suki desu. --> Nihongo ga suki desu. o kane wa suki desu. --> Okane ga suki desu. (= I like money.) watashi no kami wa shiro janai desu. --> Watashi no kami / kaminoke wa shiroku nai desu. (= My hair isn't white.) In my opinion, putting your English level on your profile and writing sentences with the English sentences would be better. I hope this helps you.
