A fill-in-the-blank question. My Chinese English teacher didn't give us a convincing reason. -The returned scholar has become one of the tep scientists in the field. -Yes, we all know him very well. He (BLANK) for 10 year in a university in the U.S.A. A. has studied B. has been studying C. studied D. had studied Thank you for any help!

As the scientist has now returned to his home country - presumably for good. It is a finished action in finished time so I believe the correct answer should be 'C' - 'studied'. A & B would indicate that he is still studying and D is talking about a time before a time in the past. Hope this helps Bob

In decreasing order of preference - C A D B. It's definitely not B - as that is present perfect, so includes now. He is a scientist now, so is definitely not studying now. It's not D - as using that form suggests 'had studied, then ...' A sounds OK - but is more complicated than C, which simply conveys the information needed.

'C' - I can't explain why though.

I would say C, like Spangola. He studied for a period of fixed duration in the US. We know that period has finished (and therefore we use the simple past) because the first statement says that he has returned.

I think it's B given that he's been doing it for a period.
