My motivation as a teacher is to help my students be themselves in any language. We are all individuals and language is a tool for our individual expression. You may need a recognised language exam to move forward with your life, or you may want to use English for professional communication, or you might just enjoy expressing yourself in English. For those feeling anxious about their skills I have developed a framework based on cognitive awareness so that you can notice limiting beliefs and develop strategies to address language based anxieties. I will provide resources suited to your needs and can offer homework and self-study suggestions.
I am student centred and love getting to know the aims and interests of my students. I have a varied background and have supported students with diverse aims. I spent eight years with an academic focus teaching English in secondary schools and helping students apply to British universities. Prior to that I supported international students at a British university enrolled on a wide range of courses from undergraduate Nutrition to a PhD in Sculpture. I have devised and run short courses for groups of students visiting the UK with cultural interests as well as helping students to develop language for specific job roles.

I have also taught these examinations across institutions for 10 years.

English Teacher and Materials WritierI teach online and face to face English lessons one to one. My students range from school aged to adults. Some students work towards recognised examinations, while others enjoy exploring literature, history, philosophy or politics through discussion, reading, listening and writing. The variety of one to one teaching is rewarding and enjoyable.

Refugee English Language Tutor ManagerI established a volunteer refugee teaching programme. I recruited qualified English language teachers following safer recruitment practices. I assessed the needs of tutees and matched them to tutors. I also undertook tutoring myself. The programme ran for 18 months until it was no longer needed.

Joanne is a very active and friendly tutor. She always prepares suitable materials based on your needs and requests for each class. She is well-organized and professional. At the beginning of every session, she asks if I have any questions or issues with the previous lesson. At the end of each lesson, she provides a helpful summary of what we covered, including my mistakes and extra tips to follow, which I appreciate. This makes practicing the lesson clear and effective, and it's easy to revisit the material for review at any time.
