Class 266 — your toolkit. Dictionaries, keyboards and how to use AI for Malayalam, because most learners use all three badly. THE KEYBOARD, and this is the highest-priority item and the one most people postpone. Install a Malayalam keyboard on your phone tonight, and use the transliteration mode: you type the sounds in Roman letters and it produces script. Type m-a-zh-a and it offers മഴ. Within two weeks it is faster than you expect, and every message you send in script is reading practice, spelling practice and motor practice at once. Typing Manglish in Roman letters is easier today and will slow your reading down permanently — the one piece of advice in this course that most learners ignore and later regret. DICTIONARIES. Malayalam is not a well-served language for learner dictionaries — there is nothing comparable to what exists for French or Spanish. Cross-check; never rely on one source. And know the specific weakness: a dictionary gives you a word, and the word is rarely your problem. Your problem is which of four near-synonyms fits this register. A dictionary will tell you that both വീട് and ഗൃഹം mean house. It will not tell you that saying ഗൃഹം in conversation makes you sound like a court summons. AI, precisely. Good for: explaining grammar · generating graded practice at your level · breaking down a sentence you did not understand · decoding a word into its Sanskrit components · drilling you. Unreliable for: register (the training data skews written, and written Malayalam is not spoken Malayalam) · current slang · dialect · complex conjuncts in script. So the rule: AI for explanation and practice, a human for register. And the technique almost nobody uses — ask it to explain, not to translate. Do not ask how do I say this. Ask: here is my attempt, what is wrong with it and why?
