British Accent Review and Test | Real British English #025
Mô tả
You have now met more than twenty features of the modern Standard British accent. The risk is that they stay separate in your head: you can do the schwa in a drill but forget it when you chat with your neighbour. Many learners also keep the habits of their own language, such as saying every letter as it is written, or giving every syllable the same strength.
In this episode:
• Rhythm, stress and melody
• The vowels
• The consonants
• Joining words
• Real-speed dialogue
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key phrases from this episode:
I'll PUT the KETtle ON. — only three strong beats
photograph (FOH-tuh-grahf), photography (fuh-TOG-ruh-fee) — the stress moves
I've LOST my KEYS. — the main beat falls on the last important word
Where are your SHOES? — the voice falls on a wh- question
Are you READY? — the voice rises on a yes or no question
The soup's nice, but... — down then up on nice means there is a "but"
ship or sheep, full or fool, cup or cap — length changes the word
far away (FAH-ruh-WAY) — the written R comes back before a vowel
better (BET-uh), bottle (BOT-ul) — a clear, crisp T between vowels in careful speech
football (FOO'-bawl), not now (NO' NOW) — a tiny catch replaces T before a consonant
think, three, this, mother — the tongue lightly touches the top teeth
Have you seen 'im? — H drops from unstressed him, but stays in house and home
street, texts, months — no extra vowel, no dropped sound
gonna (GUH-nuh), wanna (WON-uh), dunno (duh-NOH) — for speech, not writing
