How to ask for help in Malayalam politely, offer it naturally, refuse it without giving offence, and understand why saying thank you to someone close can quietly push them away. I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken. THE WORDS സഹായം - sahaayam - help ഉപകാരം - upakaaram - a favour, a kindness ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട് - buddhimuttu - trouble, inconvenience ശല്യം - shalyam - a nuisance, a bother നന്ദി - nandi - thanks TWO VERBS FOR GIVING Malayalam builds direction into the verb itself. തരിക - tarika - to give, when the receiver is me or us കൊടുക്കുക - kodukkuka - to give, when the receiver is anyone else എനിക്ക് തരൂ - enikku taroo - give it to me അവന് കൊടുക്കൂ - avanu kodukkoo - give it to him THE HIGHEST-VALUE PATTERN IN SPOKEN MALAYALAM Verb + തരാമോ (taraamo) means do this for me. It is polite, natural, and it will get you almost anything. ചെയ്തുതരാമോ? - cheythutaraamo? - could you do it for me? എഴുതിത്തരാമോ? - ezhuthittaraamo? - could you write it down for me? കാണിച്ചുതരാമോ? - kaanichutaraamo? - could you show me? പറഞ്ഞുതരാമോ? - paranjutaraamo? - could you teach me? എടുത്തുതരാമോ? - eduthutaraamo? - could you get it for me? ASKING, OFFERING, REFUSING ഒന്ന് സഹായിക്കാമോ? - onnu sahaayikkaamo? - could you help me? ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാകുമോ? - buddhimuttaakumo? - will it be an inconvenience? ഞാൻ സഹായിക്കാം - njaan sahaayikkaam - I will help പറഞ്ഞാൽ മതി - paranjaal mathi - just say the word വേണ്ട, ഞാൻ ചെയ്തോളാം - venda, njaan cheytholaam - no need, I will do it myself WHY YOU SHOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE SAYING THANK YOU നന്ദി is correct in shops, offices and with strangers. Between people who are close it can create distance: it marks the act as a transaction between two separate parties, when the whole point was that you are not separate parties. Which of these surprised you most? Comment below and I will answer. #LearnMalayalam #Malayalam #SpeakMalayalam
