日本の夏には、「打ち水」という習慣があります。庭や道路などの地面に水をまくことです。水をまくと、周りの空気が涼しくなります。エアコンを使わないで涼しくする、環境に優しい知恵ですね。みなさんの国でも、夏に水をまく習慣がありますか？

日本（にほん）の夏（なつ）には、「打ち水（うちみず）」という習慣（しゅうかん）があります。庭（にわ）や道路（どうろ）などの地面（じめん）に水（みず）をまくことです。水（みず）をまくと、周（まわ）りの空気（くうき）が涼（すず）しくなります。エアコンを使（つか）わないで涼（すず）しくする、環境（かんきょう）に優しい（やさしい）知恵（ちえ）ですね。みなさんの国（くに）でも、夏（なつ）に水（みず）をまく習慣（しゅうかん）がありますか？

【English】 
In the Japanese summer, there is a custom called "Uchimizu." It is the act of sprinkling water on the ground, such as in gardens or on roads. When you sprinkle water, the surrounding air becomes cool. It is an environmentally friendly wisdom to cool down without using air conditioning. Does your country also have a custom of sprinkling water in summer?

🔶 Noun + という + Item (Item called Noun)
Example:
「打ち水」という習慣があります。 There is a custom called "Uchimizu."
「お盆」という休みがあります。 There is a holiday called "Obon."

🔶 Verb (short form) + と (Whenever / If... then...)
Example:
水をまくと、涼しくなります。 When you sprinkle water, it becomes cool.
冬になると、雪が降ります。 Whenever winter comes, it snows.

🔶 Verb (nai-form) + ないで (Without doing...)
Example:
エアコンを使わないで涼しくします。 We cool down without using air conditioning.
辞書を見ないで日本語を書きました。 I wrote Japanese without looking at a dictionary.

LANGUAGE NOTES
• Hey! is a friendly expression meaning “hello.”
• How did your physics exam go? is a way of saying “How was your physics exam?”
• I’m just glad … Notice the stress on “glad.” “Just” is used for emphasis before an 
adjective here.
• How about you … Notice the intonation falls here because the speaker is going to 
follow it up with a detailed question.
• How’d your presentation … Notice the contraction for “How did” sounds like /howdj/ 
and “your” sounds like /yer/.
• Do you feel like here has the meaning of “do you want to.” Notice “do you feel like” is 
followed by an “-ing” verb (studying).
• Come over here has the meaning of “come to my house.”
