Cross-Cultural Misreadings: "Background First, Point Last" and Finding the Main Message | Understanding Indian English #118
Mô tả
A manager from another country asks a simple question: "Will the release be ready on Monday?" Her Indian colleague answers: "Actually, ma'am, last week the testing team got the new build late, and then two people were on leave, and the client also changed one screen, so we had to redo the flow, and we are working late to cover..." The manager is waiting for "yes" or "no", and starts to feel the answer is being avoided. The colleague, on his side, is being careful and respectful: he is giving the context first so that the answer, when it comes, makes sense and nobody is blamed.
What you will learn:
• Background first, point last
• How to get the point first, politely
• Other common misreadings
• Misreadings in the other direction
• Writing across styles

• Practice: decode the scene
• Listening strategies
• Self-check questions to test your ear
Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes.
Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
