Not to be confused with the very private idea of a diary, a journal in which you record your thoughts and observations in a language you are learning can make a great mirror to your studies and conversation experiences in that language. This author found that her students not only improved from but also enjoyed the experience of keeping a journal.

Of course keeping a notebook here at Italki is one way.  I mentioned that you could keep a digital journal, either privately or here on Italki. I am trying to focus on the importance of writing, why one should write, if one is not already writing, how often and to offer suggestions on topics.   Whether you write here, or you keep a notebook or something on your computer, the important thing is to write and to write more often.

I kept an online journal in english in livejournal from 2001 to 2011 and I can say that it really helped me to improve my writing and also by reading other journals I became familiar with the language as a reader.  I wish I had more time to keep writing though.  Hope you all give it a try!  Great article.

Every now and then I wrote something. It really helps! Now I'm in touch with foreigners who I write them in English, but before it I held a notebook where I used writing down a few sentences. Nothing complicated neither too long, in my case it was a sentence including a new words.

Be simple but constantly. I've study english for almost 6 years and I make maaaany mistakes, but I'm in a hurry to be fluent like a native, if I can communicate to foreigners and maybe realize my dream to go to some country that speaks english by myself that's enough.

Almost everybody can walk for 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 years and still then stumble. A few years practicing a language with a few stumbles doesn't make me sad, but if I stop studying for a week it is like a death sentence for me.

Hi, I read about writing process you mentioned, i must say its very informative, encouraging and will definitely give it a try. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful article and make me realize that only practice will matter.

Thank you so much for your comment, Anita!  I am so happy to hear that I could inspire someone to write through my own writing.  I love it.  I remember the first time I thought  to make a journal entry into my diary in French, or even to try to write a poem in French.  It caused me to think differently, and very consciously about how to say things.  I agree with you completely that it causes you to think carefully about construction and thus make the words flow more easily when speaking.
