Dialects of the Japanese language

Japan is smaller than any other country. However, there are many dialects. I heard that Japanese people from* the northern regions speak muffled because they can't fully open their mouth because of the heavy cold. The pronunciation of words is sometimes quite different. On the other hand, the southern regions are also quite different, too. When I went to the countryside; the prefecture of Okinawa*, I couldn't understand their dialects even through I'm a native Japanese. I had a strange feeling.

Comments:

"...that Japanese people of northern regions..." = there are two ways you could say/ write this:

"Japanese people from the northern regions" = would be very common and natural. "People from the north..." is simply, short and natural too. Either one would be correct.  'Japanese people of (the) northern regions' = technically this is grammatically correct, but it doesn't sound natural, it seems like very traditional language (e.g from Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones).

"When i went to the countryside of Okinawa prefecture" = In English the countryside is a PLACE not a NAME. So you could say/ write this two ways:

"When I went to the countryside; the prefecture of Okinawa" or "When i went to Okinawa"

In English we wouldn't say 'Okinawa Prefecture", we would just say the name; 'Okinawa'. You could say prefecture, but you would have to say it like this: "I went to a prefecture of Okinawa". But it just doesn't sound natural, although it is correct. For instance, If i want to go to Japan, I don't say "I want to go to the country of Japan" i would just say "i want to go to Japan".

I hope this helps. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
