What is 'Americaness' ? Good day my friends. I have a course of American Society at my university and one of the questions at the exam will be 'Americanness" and beside book-learning I would know opinions of people. So, my American friends - What is 'Americanness' for you?

Hello, mr. McDhaibhidh. I think no doubts in some sense you are right. But, in my opinion, no one society can exist without something that makes it common. There are some notions that are really significant for the Americans, for example such as the Frontier. America was born as the society of people dissatisfied with the order of the Old World, running from a religious persecution. Then when the dissatisfied people appeared in the new-created US they also went to unsettled territories to build their own order and so on. The hardest guys went to the West (another notion of American character) There they built their houses and the image of true Americans - hard, self-reliable people that can provide and protect themselves. The West is significant in a culture of the Americans. I even don't speak about westerns. Do you remember Howard's Conan? Was he accidentally a man from the West?

Hallo Ivan, I fear you cannot ask this question of the people in which you refer and expect to get an answer - Americans will not know what 'Americaness' is - it is an outside perception. It would be an opinion, based on what you see. So, how do you as a Russian, preceive Americans? I have lived here for many years with Americans and each one of them would have a different opinion of themselves and America. So, you would need to generalize (bring together) all of the things you see as American. It is what you, Ivan, feels that it is. Regards, CF
