Understanding the difference between 'study' and 'learn'
In my first notebook entry, I wanted to say, "I want to learn Mandarin". I wrote 我要学会汉语。Many people corrected me, they said to write 我要学汉语, without the 会。 But I thought 学 means 'study', while 学会 means 'learn'. I want to LEARN 汉语, not just study it! Was what I wrote wrong?

“我要学会汉语”  is correct! But most of Chinese wouldn't say that in our most of life.It sound a little bit awkward.
我要学会汉语 is like a determination.
 I want to LEARN 汉语=我想学会汉语。
我想学会汉语 is better than 我要学会汉语，I think.

you know，我要学会汉语，the mean you will do it and you will acheve your goal.but 学，the mean is just you will do it。may be or may be not acheve your goal。impersonality,no one know the result.so,in a general way,we use 学 not 学会。but you can use 学会。it is not fault

我要學中文，it means that you are going to learn or study Chinese.
我要學會中文，it means that you are going to learn or study with determination.
In the sentence 我要學會中文, the character: 會, means to master it. 
For example: 你會不會說中文？: Do you speak Chinese？
