M.I.A. comes from military terminology. It stands for "Missing in Action," meaning that a soldier was lost during a battle or other military exercise, presumably either killed or captured.
It is sometimes used in casual conversation, as in your example, to mean the person was not around when they were needed.
It is not something I would say is used very frequently, but it is used often enough that most Americans would know what it means.

M.I.A. is a military term. It is short for "Missing in action". (A similar terms is K.I.A. - Killed in Action). During the US involvement in the war in Vietnam, this and other military terms were used in the news enough that it became part of the American vernacular.
Its use in everyday speech means only that one has been away or out of contact without further explanation. It is casual, slang. It is not a proper or formal expression.
