if you listen you are paying attention to what you hear. if you aren't listening to someone you might not hear or understand what they tell you.

Hear and listen are very similar, but the main difference is listening takes more effort than hearing.
Hearing is just everyday hearing for the ears, ackenlowidng noises.
Listening is hearing something specifically! It is like hearing, but with concentration and focus.
I heard the rain. (You heard something very common, like rain)
I listened to my teacher this morning. (You put actual effort into understanding what your teacher said)

Something extra, aside from the basic definitions: "hear" is a transitive verb, so we need to know *what* you hear. "Listen" is intransitive, so if you give an object, you need a preposition: "to". "I hear music." "I listen to music." ("I listen music" is simply wrong.)

I agree that listening definitely takes more effort than hearing. It is an active verb, while hearing (to hear) is passive. Listening also implies understanding, or at least an attempt at understanding and absorbing what you hear. Listening allows you to communicate on a deeper level, and the difference between listening and hearing can actually lead to misunderstanding, especially in romantic relationships. Think of the last time you got into an argument with a close friend, boyfriend or girlfriend. Maybe one of you even said something like, "I know that you hear me but your not listening to what I say!"
Next time you have a discussion or conversation with a friend, lover or coworker, take a moment to make sure that you really are listening to what they are saying. While they are speaking, if you cannot stop thinking about what you want to say after they are finished speaking, then you heard them, but you definitely were not listening.
