As pointed out by others, "rob" and "steal" have different meanings, unbeknownst to many native speakers. Nevertheless, both verbs ultimately involve taking things from someone without permission.
However, steal and rob have differing word order and prepositions:
"He robbed him OF his custom Porsche 911" (Hey, if we're going to live a life of crime, we might as well think big!)
"He stole the custom Porsche 911 FROM him.
However, as Gratsie pointed out, robbing involves force or violence, while stealing could be done while the owner sleeps.
Lastly, be aware of the word "burglarize". The legal definition is to intend to break in with the intention of stealing or committing some other crime. So, a "burglar" goes into the house with the intent to "steal", but when the owner surprises him, the gun-wielding "thief" then becomes a "robber".

Stealing is when you take something that doesn't belong to you with no right to do it. That's what a thief does.
And robbing, is when taking something from somebody or someplace using force or violence. That's what a robber does.
So the difference is the use of force or/and violence.
Hope it helped. :)

People and places are robbed, and things are stolen. So you can steal money, but you can't rob money. You can rob a person, but if you steal a person it's something else: abduction.
