「と」particle as a single concept? Does anyone have a way to think of the と particle as a single concept? I've found that I can summarise every other particle as a single concept so that all I usually need is context to understand what's going on, yet for と I have yet to accurately construct some kind of definition for, and thinking of と as a bunch of little meanings really doesn't work for me and usually causes me a lot of problems where I have to backup and re-read the sentence or stare at the sentence for a good 10 seconds or so to finally get it. Way too slow.

I suggest you think of this by memorising a sentence. For example, 私はみかんとりんごを買いました。 You know here that you are using と to join two words together Try thinking of different situations where と is used and memorise them. This can help you understand the context they can be used in which might help you when you are reading or listening.
