For learning Russian, what is a good way to start with vocabulary? I can read Russian pretty slowly, and I've started learning how to say things. To move on from here, I was thinking of finding a source that can tell me endings for nouns and verbs according to what/how is being said. Other than that, I will be practicing reading and speaking Russian. Should I even be doing this? How do you recommend I continue learning (apart from spending too much money)? Many thanks! - Troy

Any Russian text book worth it's salt should explain how to change the endings. I would recommend to get a couple of them, as then you can read the same thing explained in different ways. It needn't be expensive and they will last you a good while. I would continue to read, write, listen and talk whilst slowly making your way through the grammar. Just spend time with the language and use the grammar to slowly demystify how things fit together. There's lots of vocabulary to learn, so just crack on with it. Of course, you need to find a study method that suits you. I prefer flashcards, Anki and Memrise are popular and effective tools for learning lots of words. Ideally you should be learning the words that you are reading & hearing in your other activities to give them context. Other people like writing lists of words out by hand rather than using flashcards, or you can just absorb them naturally from your reading and listening. Do whatever suits you. I recommend taking lessons with a professional teacher reasonably regularly to ensure you are getting proper feedback and some direction on what you should work on. You don't need to spend a fortune, but I should think in combination with your other studies probably one lesson a week would be plenty. If you need any teacher recommendations just send me a message. Hope this helps! The main thing is to keep going and enjoy what you're doing. Russian is a great language and you'll makes some really great Russian friends. Good luck!

Well, I would recommend to you to watch movies or TV shows - this is easiest and cheapest way to learn a language. It's my way to study English for example. I watch movies with English subs and then translate them into Russian.

I think the best way is to talk with native speakers and to watch films/listen to music in Russian)

My favorite way to be sure I'm adding to my Russian vocabulary consistently is to get a list of the top words spoken in Russian and start adding them to an excel spreadsheet. I add 100 every two weeks, and at this rate, I'll have 2600 words in a year. I am only up to 600 words, and I can read a lot, maybe only having to look up two or three words in a paragraph. Of course I am using other language learning tools, like pimsleur, language exchange, and listening to Russian radio, but keeping track of vocabulary like this helps me to make sure I am making progress with vocabulary. I learned this trick from a friend in Moscow who is a Russian/English interpreter and is adding spanish to his language skills so he can start interpreting spanish also. Once I have added another 100 words to excel, I import them into Quizlet so I can study them on my smart phone during the week. I create 5 flashcard sets of 20 that I will review over two weeks. The first week, I try to learn twenty a day. Then the second week, I review them all over again to make sure I really know the new words. You could do 100 a week, if you are that cool, and learn 5200 words in a year! Hope his helps! Удачи! Stacy
