How is "knowledgeable" different from "smart" in the phrase "knowledgeable parties"? My curiosity arose when reading the following paragraph. What's the difference between "knowledgeable" and 'smart'? "In some cases, in fact, the current political leadership of a community or neighborhood may be hostile to or embarrassed about traditional matters. As a result, it may be necessary to seek out knowledgeable parties outside the community's official political structure. It is of course best to do this with the full knowledge and cooperation of the community's contemporary leaders; in most cases it is appropriate to ask such leaders to identify members of the community who are knowledgeable about traditional cultural matters, and use these parties as an initial network of consultants on the group's traditional values. Knowledgeable means having knowledge - possessing information. Smart means intelligent - having the ability to figure things out. Hope this helps!

If someone is knowledgeable, they know a lot about a certain topic. 'Smart' means intelligent. Knowledge and intelligence are completely different concepts. The other difference is that 'knowledgeable' is a neutral word that can be used in any context. 'Smart' is an informal word which is mainly used in informal contexts.

Knowledgeable = well informed about a specific area... knowledgeable about X. Smart = clever, highly intelligent in many areas.

Judy is correct. You can be a smart person but not have knowledge on a certain subject.Your basic intelligence is something you are born with. But you learn about a subject to gain knowledge and become informed,or knowledgeable about it.

I suppose the main difference is that being knowledgeable comes from real life experience, studying and gaining information, while "smart" only means that the person is naturally clever, not necessarily experienced, educated or informed in those particular areas they need. If you're smart, you may find it easier to gain knowledge and become knowledgeable, but only with studying/experience. That's just my guess, though.
