Yes, we pick people up AT the bus station or airport, etc. You can pick up the baby off the floor or just pick him/her up. There is the slang use when I was young, we would "pick up" girls at the beach but not really lift them off the ground...it meant to get a date. Also, when I go to the store my wife asks me to "pick up" some bread or milk while I'm there...she meant "buy" or" bring home". My mother used to tell me to "pick up" my feet when I was walking...which if I had been able to, it would have been impossible to walk....she meant "lift" my feet up higher or "step" higher so not to scuff my shoes. I bet there are other uses of the phrase.
