It's important also to understand the different natures / functions of the base verbs: to do (I do, you do, he does, they/we do) - means to do an action: do a job, do your homework. So when you put is into a question you're asking if somebody does an action. 'Do you like studying?' Do you play guitar? Does she go to school here?' It's formed with 'do + pronoun + infinitive verb' to be (I am, you are, he is, they/we are) - refers to the nature of something, what it is, its characteristics - 'I am a man, you are a woman, we are people.' It is also used with 'verb-ing' to say what someone is doing right now or in the future: 'I am typing, you are reading, we are going to learn.' When you put it into a question you're asking about what something or someone is, the things that define them (their job, their background, their personality) or what they are doing right now. 'Are you English?' 'Are you eating that?' 'Is she a teacher?' 'Is it sleeping?' 'Are they happy?' It's formed with 'be + pronoun + noun/adjective/verb-ing' - with 'be' changing depending on the subject. The book English Grammar in Use is useful for learning about these differences - other books are available too!
