Hi, Mariya.
This seems like an easy question, but is actually quite complicated. 'A bit' CAN be used with a negative adjective, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some ways of using it.
‘a bit’ means different things in different contexts. My students always have difficulty with how to use ‘a bit’, and I understand why.
USED WITH COMPARATIVES
You’re right, we can use ‘a bit’ with comparatives (but not superlatives):
This dessert is a bit sweeter than that one. (Here is means ‘slightly’).
USED TO REFER TO QUANTITIES
My mother is old and needs a bit of help with the cooking. (SOME help)
I’ve lost a bit of weight (SOME weight)
NOTE: Just like ‘some’, ‘a bit’ is not specific, and depends – in spoken English – on the tone of voice of the speaker and the stress put on the words.
Sometimes, we WANT to be vague, so we can use ‘a bit’.
USED TO SOFTEN THE MEANING, SO A STATEMENT IS NOT TOO DIRECT
I’m afraid this is a bit of a problem and will have to be re-done.
(This is more polite than saying ‘It’s a problem and will….’)
Sales assistant: “I think the dress might be a bit too small, I’ll get you the next size up, shall I?” (Instead of ‘The dress is too small for you. You’re a size 16, and it’s a size 10).
USED WITH ADJECTIVES
I got a bit tired during the play and fell asleep.
I can be a bit lazy at times.
USED TO REFER TO A SHORT DISTANCE OR PERIOD OF TIME
I’m stuck in traffic. Just wait a bit and I’ll be there soon.
Can you move your bag a bit?
USED TO MEAN ‘VERY’
Here’s what often confuses my students. ‘A bit’ can mean ‘slightly’, but it can also mean ‘very’. To know which meaning it has, you need to look at the context and listen to the tone of voice.
Blimey! It’s a bit hot in that kitchen!
I was thirsty, but he didn’t offer me any water. It was a bit mean!
I know that’s a lot to learn, but learn it in context and it will become easier. Good luck!

Hi Mariya
"a bit" is really a shortened form of "a little bit" when used in this context. So a one word translation might be something like "slightly"
Could we meet a bit earlier = could we meet a little bit earlier = could we meet slightly earlier
Hope that helps
