Generally, the word "пальто" is correct. But, depending on context, "a coat" can be translated as "куртка, китель, пиджак" and even as "мундир". "Пальто" is used more often as an appropriate translating word for "a coat". Men may wear пальто too.

With all of the names for clothes it's always good to look up pictures in Google images. Just copy-paste these words in russian into Google and see exactly what the mean, because they do not always correspond to English translations. пальто куртка шуба пиджак

I would say that it is пальто whenever it is a civilian garment that looks more or less classical or formal, is well-tailored, made from a rather good material. Also, those modern casual outer clothes that are rather long, are often referred to as пальто too, even though those of the same design but shorter would be куртка.
