You can ask the driver, "Will this bus take me to Main Street (or wherever you want to go)?" You could also say something like, "Could you please tell me when we get to the Main St. stop"?

Yes. Get a bus pass. Then > get on the bus and say "Excuse me, does this bus go to ~~~~?" If they say "No." Get off the bus. If they say "Yes" then take the bus. Before you get on the bus find out what the place you are going to looks like. Then when you see the place, get off the bus. Always smile and say "Thank you" too. Most bus drivers are helpful - just speak clearly and slowly.

Yes. Bus routes are fixed. Unless you want to ask the bus driver whether the bus takes you to the place you would like to go, you say "Do I take this bus to (whatever place)?" or "Does this bus take me to (whatever place)?"

Depends on the country you happen to be in. In Russia you may come up to the driver and say - шеф, тормозни здесь, тут же следующая остановка еще километра два ( Slang - Chief the next stop is 2 kms away, man, this here would be the pleasure if you stopped it right here man... ) It helps. He''ll stop the bus for you. If the distance is measured in hundred meters he'll calmly tell you to go f.. yourself.
