English tutor Alice here. A question for American English language learners.... How well do you know American English phrasal verbs? Do you know a lot of them? Do you use a lot of them? What about prepositions? Do you know them? Do you use them? Can you say them comfortably? Vocabulary? Can you say enough when someone asks you a question? Or do you give just a one sentence answer? Do you ever elaborate or say more? Do you feel 'Limited' in your ability to speak? Do you say the same phrases? Do you just 'Stick to what you know.'? Are you wanting to really get better with your speaking? Have you had a lesson with someone from the United States? Someone to teach you phrasal verbs, vocab, prepositions, slang and more?

Last week, I went to Hokkaido. The most impressive thing for me was Mount Shari. It looked so powerful, and it was also really beautiful. I had seen pictures of it before, but seeing a mountain with my own eyes is very different. I kept looking at it because I didn’t want to forget the view. I also watched the sunrise from Shari Pass. There was a sea of clouds below us, and the sunlight slowly came over it. I was still sleepy because it was so early, but when I saw that view, I was glad I woke up. I took some photos, but I think the real view was much more beautiful than the photos. After that, I ate an ikura rice bowl for breakfast. The area is famous for salmon, so I was especially excited to eat ikura there. It was really delicious. Eating it after watching such a beautiful sunrise made the morning feel even more special. I knew I would enjoy this trip, but I didn’t expect one morning to stay in my memory this much.

A friend asks about your favourite dish. Can you explain what goes into it and what comes alongside it? With World Food Day coming on 16 October, practise these two useful expressions: Made with introduces ingredients: “This soup is made with lentils, carrots and onions.” Served with introduces something accompanying the dish: “It’s served with bread.” The difference matters: bread alongside the soup is not the same as bread used to make it. Your turn: Choose a dish you know. Complete both sentences: “It’s made with…” “It’s usually served with…”

🇬🇧 You don't need perfect English to have a good conversation. One thing I think is really important when learning English is understanding that you don't need to know every word to communicate. Sometimes, you forget a word. Sometimes, you make a mistake. And sometimes, you have to explain something in a completely different way because you can't remember the exact expression. And that's absolutely fine! For example, if you forget the word fireplace, you could say “the place where a family sits around a fire.” You might not have used the exact word you wanted, but you've still communicated your meaning. And that's a real skill. 😊 The more you practise finding different ways to express yourself, the more confident you can become. Communication isn't about being perfect. It's about finding a way to make yourself understood. 💬
