– Здравствуй, Лео! В прошлый раз мы говорили о высокой кухне, а сегодня я бы хотела поговорить об обычной еде, домашней. О каше.
– Да, щи да каша – пища наша. 
– Ты же умеешь варить каши? 
– Умею.
– Из чего? 
– Из разных круп. Из гречки с мясом, из риса на молоке, из пшена с тыквой… 
– А из топора когда-нибудь варил? 
– Из чего-чего? 
– Из топора. 
– Вы шутите? 
– Какие шутки? Был однажды случай. Старый солдат шёл на побывку… 
– Давайте объясним нашим слушателям: побывка – это отпуск военного, солдата. У школьников и студентов – каникулы, у людей, которые работают – отпуск, а у военных, у солдат – побывка.
– Спасибо, Лео. Солдат устал в пути, и ему захотелось есть. Пришёл в деревню, постучал в крайнюю избу и попросился отдохнуть и поесть с дороги. У хозяйки еда была, но женщина не хотела делиться. 
– А, вспомнил! Вы же рассказываете сказку «Каша из топора»! Значит, вы точно шутили!
– Верно.
– Тогда давайте вместе расскажем эту сказку нашим слушателям.
– Давай. Так вот. Женщина говорит: Ох, добрый человек, я и сама сегодня ещё ничего не ела: нечего. 
– Ну, нет так нет, – говорит солдат. Но тут он заметил под лавкой топор. - Если ничего другого нет, можно сварить кашу из топора.
Хозяйка удивилась: 
– Разве можно из топора кашу сварить? 
– Давай-ка котёл. 
Хозяйка принесла котёл, солдат вымыл топор, положил в котёл, налил воды и поставил на огонь. Женщина внимательно смотрела, как солдат будет варить кашу.  Достал солдат ложку, мешает варево. Попробовал. 
– Ну, как? – спрашивает женщина.
– Скоро будет готова, жаль вот только, что посолить нечем. 
– Соль-то у меня есть, посоли. 
Солдат посолил, снова попробовал. 
– Хороша! Если бы сюда немного крупы добавить!
Женщина принесла крупы. Добавил солдат крупы. Варил, варил, мешал ложкой. Попробовал. 
– Ох, и хороша каша! Сюда бы чуть-чуть масла – была бы вкуснотища!..

Tea and the Industrial RevolutionA Cambridge professor says that a change in drinking habits was the reason for the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Anjana Abuja reports

Alan Macfarlane, professor of anthropological science at King’s College, Cambridge has, like other historians, spent decades wrestling with the enigma of the Industrial Revolution. Why did this particular Big Bang – the world-changing birth of industry-happen in Britain? And why did it strike at the end of the 18th century?

Macfarlane compares the puzzle to a combination lock. ‘There are about 20 different factors and all of them need to be present before the revolution can happen,’ he says. For industry to take off, there needs to be the technology and power to drive factories, large urban populations to provide cheap labour, easy transport to move goods around, an affluent middle-class willing to buy mass-produced objects, a market-driven economy and a political system that allows this to happen. While this was the case for England, other nations, such as Japan, the Netherlands and France also met some of these criteria but were not industrialising. All these factors must have been necessary. But not sufficient to cause the revolution, says Macfarlane. ‘After all, Holland had everything except coal while China also had many of these factors. Most historians are convinced there are one or two missing factors that you need to open the lock.’

今天想和大家聊一聊“冷”的话题。
大家都知道冷是温度低的意思，它的反义词是热。如果今天只有8度（°C），我们可以说今天好冷啊，我要多穿几件衣服。夏天的时候，大家喜欢喝冷饮，例如冰可乐、冰啤酒、冰奶茶。还有夏天必不可少的冰淇淋。大家可能会说，冬天我们也喝冷饮吃冰淇淋啊。
这里要告诉大家一个文化小知识。在中国，大家在吃的方面比较讲究。小时候天气冷的时候，妈妈会告诉我们：“不可以吃冷的，对身体不好。”所以我们长大后也是这样的习惯。不过啊，现在年轻人越来越不在乎这些了， 他们想什么时候吃就什么时候吃。
冷还可以表示一个人的态度。例如，他对我很冷淡，一点儿也不热情。也可以说：她总是冷冰冰的。如果两个人吵架了，互相不说话，我们可以说：他们在冷战。如果你的朋友很激动，你可以告诉他：你冷静点儿。
冷还有其他有意思的用法。例如冷门，冷门专业是指那些很少人会选择学习的专业，它的反义词是热门专业。很多年前，计算机在中国是冷门专业，过去十几年变成了热门专业。
