Why Malayalam Letters Are Round — The Palm Leaf That Shaped a Script | Learn Malayalam #57
คำอธิบาย
Look at written Malayalam and you notice one thing before you can read a single letter: it is round. Loops, curls, spirals, almost no straight lines. Devanagari, from the same ancestor, went the other way — straight strokes hanging from a hard bar. This episode explains why, and the answer is not aesthetic or cultural. It is agricultural.
THE PALM LEAF
ഓല the prepared palm leaf Kerala wrote on before paper
എഴുത്താണി the metal stylus — you did not write with ink, you scratched
Soot was rubbed over the leaf afterwards so it settled into the scratches and the writing appeared.
A palm leaf has fibres running along its length. Drag a sharp point in a straight line along that grain and you do not write a letter — you split the leaf. So the southern scribes curved everything. A curve crosses the fibres at constantly changing angles and never rides one fibre long enough to tear it. Malayalam is round because a straight stroke would have ripped the page.
THE SAME PHYSICS ACROSS ASIA
Sinhala, Burmese, Telugu, Kannada, Javanese, Balinese — all round, all palm-leaf cultures. Devanagari, Bengali and Gurmukhi went straight because birch bark and paper took a reed pen beautifully. The shape of a writing system is the shape of what people had to write on.
THE LINEAGE
ബ്രാഹ്മി Brahmi, fully formed in the Ashokan edicts of the third century BCE, mother of nearly every Indian script plus Tibetan, Thai, Lao, Khmer and Burmese
വട്ടെഴുത്ത് Vattezhuthu — വട്ടം round + എഴുത്ത് writing. They named it after exactly this property.
കോലെഴുത്ത് and മലയാണ്മ, Kerala's other local systems
ഗ്രന്ഥലിപി the Grantha script, developed to write Sanskrit in the south — the chief ancestor of the modern letters
എഴുത്തച്ഛൻ Ezhuthachan, sixteenth century, credited with settling the alphabet into one working system
The elegant irony: the script Malayalam uses today was adopted mainly so Kerala could write Sanskrit properly, and it became the vehicle for a great Dravidian literature.
