作者はさっき「下人が雨やみを待っていた」と書いた。
しかし、下人は雨がやんでも、格別どうしようという当てはない。
ふだんなら、勿論、主人の家へ帰るべきはずである。
ところがその主人からは、　四、五日前に暇を出された。
前にも書いたように、当時京都の町は一通りならず衰微していた。
今この下人が、長年、使われていた主人から暇を出されたのも、
実はこの衰微の小さな余波にほかならない。
だから「下人が雨やみを待っていた」というよりも
「雨にふりこめられた下人が、行き所がなくて、途方にくれていた」
という方が、適当である。
その上、今日の空模様も少からず、
この平安朝の下人の Sentimentalisme に影響した。

Mistakes - Ошибки 

みなさんは「さっき」という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？「さっき起きました」「さっきまで勉強していました」など、「さっき」とは少し前という意味です。昨日より前に起こったことは「さっき」とは言いません。
では、「さっき」より前のことはどう言いますか？いつのことかを覚えている場合は「先週友達とご飯を食べました。」とはっきりとその時を示した方が分かりやすいと思います。いつのことか覚えていない場合は、「前に」や「この前」、「以前」などを使います。
例えば「前に会ったことがあります」「この前はじめてお寿司を食べました」「以前この場所に来たことがあります」と言います。ちなみに「前に」や「この前」、「以前」はニュアンスがそれぞれ少しずつ違うので自分で例文を作って練習したり、日本人がどのように使い分けているかを注意して聞いてみてください。

PETER: Hey! That car just ran a red light and hit that truck!
GAIL: Is anyone hurt?
PETER: I don’t know … let’s call 911. … Hello? I’d like to report
a car accident near the post office on Charles Street.
It looks like a man is hurt. Yes, it just happened. OK, 
thanks. Bye.
GAIL: What did they say?
PETER: They’re going to send an ambulance and a police car 
right away.
GAIL: Good, they’re here. I hope the man is OK.
PETER: I know. You have to be so careful when you’re driving.


LANGUAGE NOTES
• Hey! This expression is used to show surprise. Notice how That car just ran a red light
and hit that truck! is said with a lot of energy.
• Is anyone hurt? This is a yes/no question, so the intonation rises at the end. Notice 
how this question is asked in a worried way.
• 911 is the phone number you dial for emergency services. The person who answers 
will ask you questions about the emergency situation and then send out the necessary 
emergency services, which may include police officers, firefighters and an ambulance.
• I’d like to report a car accident near the post office on Charles Street. Notice how 
the key words “car accident,” “post office” and “Charles Street” are stressed. These are 
the important details that the emergency services need. 
• It just happened is a way of saying “It happened a moment ago.” Notice the stress on 
“just,” which emphasizes that the accident happened very, very recently.
• What did they say? Notice how “say” is emphasized, but the intonation falls at the end 
of the word. This is a “what” question, so the intonation falls at the end

Today we’re talking about "Look after"

It sounds responsible, right? If you "look after" something, you’re taking care of it. You know, like when you "look after" a friend’s cat. But let’s be honest, you probably just fed it, gave it water, and then spent three hours watching Netflix

"Phrasal Verbs Gone Wild!"

Ep.3: "Look After... But Not Too Closely"

Ingredients:
3 onions
3 carrots
2 potatoes
1 parsnip or turnip
3 celery sticks
250 g  mushrooms
1 ½ tbsp plain flour 
500 ml vegetable stock made with 1.5 stock cubes
1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp tomato puree
1 tsp mixed herbs
2 dashes of Tabasco sauce
120 g frozen peas
Freshly ground pepper

Method:

Roughly chop all the vegetables (except frozen peas) and place in a large bowl.
Stir in the flour, herbs and pepper.
Tip into slow cooker.
To the stock add and mix in the Balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, tabasco sauce and tomato puree.
Pour over the vegetables.
Cook until vegetables are tender.
