Can, Must and Need: Pattum, Kazhiyum, Venam, Venda | Spoken Malayalam #029
คำอธิบาย
English uses one little word, "can", for three different ideas: "I can swim" (I know how), "I can come tomorrow" (it's possible for me), and "you can't play here" (it's not allowed). English speakers pick one Malayalam word for "can" and use it everywhere, and they start with "I": ഞാൻ നീന്താൻ അറിയാം (njaan neenthaan ariyaam). Malayalam splits "can" into separate words, and nearly all of them take the "to me" form: എനിക്ക് നീന്താൻ അറിയാം (enikku neenthaan ariyaam) = I can swim, I know how to swim.
In this episode:
• Three kinds of "can"
• Need and want: venam and venda
• Must and needn't: -anam and -anda
• Can't manage: vayya
• Mustn't: paadilla
