The Little Malayalam Words That Make You Sound Native | Learn Malayalam #333
คำอธิบาย
The small words of Malayalam — particles, exclamations and discourse markers. They are the last thing a learner acquires and the first thing that makes you sound like a person rather than a document being read aloud.
Every language has them. German has doch, ja, mal, eben. Japanese has ne, yo, sa. English has well, just, actually, you know, right. None translate cleanly, all are essential, and none appear in a beginner's textbook.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
ഒന്ന് - onnu - the softener, and the single most useful particle in the language for a foreigner
ഒന്ന് നോക്കാമോ? - onnu nokkamo? - could you just have a look?
ഒന്ന് പറയാമോ? - onnu parayamo? - could you just say?
Drop it and you are commanding. Keep it and you are asking.
ട്ടോ - tto - placed at the end, it makes a sentence warm, reassuring and slightly intimate
ശരി ട്ടോ - shari tto - all right then
ഞാൻ വരാം ട്ടോ - njan varaam tto - I will come, all right
It is what you say to someone you are fond of, and it carries a small promise. Very common in messages.
അല്ലോ - allo - exclamative: mild surprise, or a reminder of something the listener already knows, sometimes with faint reproach
നല്ലതാണല്ലോ - nallathanallo - why, it is good
The nearest English is the exclamatory "why" in "why, it's lovely" — which English speakers barely use any more.
ഓ - o - the question particle: it turns a statement into a yes-or-no question
വരുമോ? - varumo? - will you come?
ശരിയാണോ? - shariyano? - is it true?
Learn these four and your Malayalam stops sounding translated.
Which particle in your own language would you struggle to explain to a learner? Comment below.
