Malayalam Words English Does Not Have — and What They Reveal | Learn Malayalam #347
คำอธิบาย
The Malayalam words English has no single word for — and what a language chooses to name tells you what mattered enough to be worth naming.
A caution first: nothing is untranslatable. What differs is whether a concept gets its own short word or must be built each time from a phrase — and languages give short words to what their speakers need often.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
കൈപ്പുണ്യം - kaippunyam - hand-blessing. The quality of a cook whose food is better than everyone else's for no reason anyone can specify.
വാത്സല്യം - vaatsalyam - the love that flows downward: elder to younger, parent to child, teacher to student. English "affection" is too weak and "love" too general. Malayalam keeps it separate from സ്നേഹം because the direction matters.
പ്രാരാബ്ധം - praarabdham - the accumulated weight of a person's obligations and circumstances. Not misfortune, not poverty, not stress. Said with sympathy.
മടി - madi - reluctance; the inability to bring yourself to do the thing. Shades into laziness without being it.
കൊതി - kothi - the craving for a particular food, and the longing for something someone else has, without quite being envy. Physical, and innocent.
കുശുമ്പ് - kushumbu - petty jealousy. Small and faintly comic — the resentment of a neighbour's new fridge. Distinct from അസൂയ, serious envy.
ചുമ്മാ - chumma - just, idly, for no reason — and also, only joking.
സാരമില്ല - saaramilla - it does not matter, never mind, it is fine. A small word carrying a whole attitude to misfortune.
ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം - grihaathuratvam - the homesickness of one who is away. The central emotion of modern Malayalam culture.
നാട് - naadu - your place. Not country, not hometown, not village. Where you are from, regardless of where you live or what passport you hold.
Which of these does your language have one word for? Comment below.
