La lucha libre forma parte de la identidad mexicana, como el mole, los mariachis y el tequila; las máscaras de los luchadores nos identifican tanto como el águila sobre un nopal devorando una serpiente. Gracias a esta carga cultural, ahora es Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Ciudad de México.
Los primeros encuentros de lucha libre en México ocurrieron a principios del siglo XIX. Estas primeras exhibiciones incluían funciones de lucha grecorromana, las cuales fueron llevadas a cabo por tropas francesas durante la Intervención (1860-1867).
La lucha libre mexicana se deriva del catch-as-catch-can francés —que fue popular durante la década de 1930— en combinación con el wrestling estadounidense y la lucha grecorromana.
El 21 de septiembre de 1933 se fundó la empresa más importante de lucha libre en el mundo, la Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre. Y ahí comenzó a escribirse la historia de la lucha libre mexicana.
El mayor auge de la lucha libre mexicana fue, quizá, entre las décadas de 1940 y 1970, periodo que coincide con el florecimiento de otras industrias culturales del país, como el radio, el cine y la televisión.

La gloria del cine cuyos protagonistas fueron luchadores, el gran Santo como el más icónico, lograron proyectar también rasgos muy particulares de la mexicanidad, como la espiritualidad, el erotismo, la comedia y la tragedia.

La lucha libre mexicana, mezcla de circo, maroma y teatro, tiene muchos admiradores y proyección internacional. En México, de acuerdo con Morales, Fuentes y Aurrecoechea, la afición a este deporte, está apenas debajo del futbol.
