“As I live in a pretty small town, I haven't had the opportunity to meet many people from different countries or cultures, but I've had the pleasure of getting to know James, an English teacher from the UK. 

James hails from London, and moved here about 2 years ago to work as an English tutor in one of the local high schools. I guess he’s in his mid-twenties, and being one of the few foreigners here, has become a kind of local celebrity. 

The first time I met James was at an English corner, which was held at one of the local coffee shops in town. I saw it advertised, and decided to go along, as I really needed to brush up on my English speaking skills. I remember, I was the first to arrive, and introduced myself to James, and was immediately taken aback when he started to introduce himself in the local dialect! 

We got chatting, and hit it off from the start, getting along like a house on fire. Not only did it turn out that we were both football fanatics, but also shared the same taste in music. 

We have since become the best of mates, and hang out at least once or twice a week. I really love chatting to him, and getting to learn all about English culture, as well as sharing different aspects of my own culture with him. I have great respect for James, as he has really made an effort to immerse himself into the local culture here. On top of that, getting to know him has been a real eye opener, and helped to dispel any negative cultural stereotypes.”

Before the Interview:

Research: Understanding the company culture and the specific role helps you anticipate questions and tailor your responses. This demonstrates focus and genuine interest.
During the Interview:

Minimize Distractions: Silence your phone, arrive early to avoid last-minute jitters, and focus solely on the interviewer.

Power of Presence: Maintain eye contact (not staring) and an open posture that conveys attentiveness.

Listen Verbally and Nonverbally: Pay close attention to the interviewer's words, tone, and body language. A stressed tone might indicate a challenging aspect of the job, while positive body language reflects their enthusiasm.

Engage with Nonverbal Cues:  Use subtle nods and smiles to show you're following along. Leaning in slightly demonstrates genuine interest.

The Art of the Pause: Don't jump in to fill silences. Give the interviewer time to complete their thoughts and gauge their reaction to your responses.

Clarify and Confirm:  When unsure, politely ask clarifying questions. This shows you're engaged and want to understand their expectations clearly.

Paraphrase and Summarize: Briefly restate key points in your own words. This demonstrates comprehension and allows the interviewer to correct any misunderstandings.

Active Listening in Action:  Throughout the interview, weave active listening techniques into your responses.  For example, "That sounds like a very fast-paced environment.  Can you tell me more about the team dynamic?"

After the Interview:

Thank You Note: Reiterate your interest in the role and mention a specific detail gleaned through active listening. This shows you were truly engaged and attentive.
By actively listening, you demonstrate not only strong communication skills but also genuine interest in the company and the role. This sets you apart from other candidates and increases your chances of landing your dream job!
