Hello native English speakers. Which is grammatically correct? 1. The patient was asleep. 2. The patient was subject to fits. 3. The patient was abroad. 4. The patient was there. 5. The patient seemed asleep. 6. The patient seemed subject to fits. 7. The patient seemed to be asleep. 8. The patient seemed to be subject to fits. 9. The patient seemed to be abroad. 10. The patient seemed to be there. 11. The patient seemed abroad. 12. The patient seemed there.

(1-10) These are all correct and natural. In many cases, 'seemed asleep' and 'seemed to be asleep' mean the same thing. 11 & 12 sound unusual because “abroad” and “there” normally require the structure “seemed to be”. So native speakers would usually say: 11- The patient seemed to be abroad. 12- The patient seemed to be there. Hope it helps :)

These sentences are out of context which means that they cannot be assessed and corrected with precision. 5, 6, 9 (the patient was either abroad or not so please investigate how SEEMS TO is used), 10,11 and 12 are illogical.
