Goodness! What a philosophical question. I will respond by asking another question. Suppose you write a story all by yourself in Chinese with no help whatsoever, you are very proud of it, and you do not translate it. You publish it in Chinese and it is so good that it makes you famous. Is it yours? There are many great authors who would have replied “No”. They would say they are grateful for the inspiration that came to them from an unknown source. Just as people have children without knowing how cells are put together, the story passed through you and was born. It is not your own.

It depends. If you're just writing for your own pleasure, it doesn't really matter. If you're writing for publication, it would be more ethical to include a brief statement disclosing that you've utilized AI in the writing process. If you're writing for an academic assignment, it might be considered plagiarism if you use long strings of AI- written text. It could even be a serious violation of the rules of your educational institution.

Own it. It is yours.

It's difficult to assess the style and tone of a translation, but if you're satisfied that it reflects your intended sensation, then it's your writing. The mood and imagery are your creation, though you have used AI to express it clearly and effectively. You should acknowledge your use of AI and, of course, in assessed writing this would not be permitted. I use Google Translate to write in Chinese. I say that it's my ideas (hopefully) well translated i e my writing but in a nice translation, as long as I don't submit it for an assessed exercise or examination purposes.

The question is, what do you feel about this story now? Is it still your writing, your feeling, your thoughts? For example, when someone corrects my story very much by changing and replacing my words, I don't feel like this is my story anymore.
