He was never heard to say "Thank you" in his life. Does this sentence make any sense in English?

I'd say "He was never heard saying "Thank you" in his life" is better, though it may be just me

The sentence is not actually correct. It should read: "He was never heard saying" as the infinitive has a different meaning. The meaning seems to indicate ungratefulness, nevertheless.
