Today I went to an art museum with a friend. There were a lot of fascinating art works. I learned about Japanese history and other things.
THERE WERE A LOT OF ART WORKS, if WORKS refers to individual pieces of art. OR . . . THERE WAS A LOT OF ARTWORK if 'ARTWORK refers to the entire collection of art.
