I find that a lot of people learn languages just for the sake of learning. It doesn't really help or make sense. What do you think?

I think it does help and does make a ton of sense. Brain development is aided when learning. New experiences can make one happier. In unexpected ways. Supporting curiosity is good on many levels. It also helps undermine the silly and simplistic utilitarian approach to life, where only pragmatic ends are seen to have value. Finally learning outside of formal study is a revolution for lots of people. Finally they learn only because they wish to.

Hi Yuna. Good point! I absolutely agree with the CF9’s comments! I would like just add that to know a new language is the best direct and trustworthy way to come into the heart of a diferent culture and sensibility. Definitely, it is worth all the efforts and difficulties that this journey entails.

I have been learning English and I don't really need it now. It is more like a preparation for the future. It takes time to learn a language, so if the opportunity presents, I'm ready.

I agree that it doesn’t make sense to learn a language just for the sake of learning it. You can even lose part of your first (native) language if you stop using it, never mind a foreign language. I guess some people are just bored and they’re trying to find meaning in learning something new, but then there’s a problem because most of them just never sees anything through because after a short while they just lose motivation and shift to doing something new.
