🎐 You spot something interesting in a Japanese shop… but you don’t know what it’s called.
Would you walk away, or start a conversation?
I took this photo while exploring Tokyo with my camera. Shops like this are full of things to discover, from folding fans to wind chimes.
You don’t need to know every word to enjoy the experience. Sometimes, one simple question opens the door:
「これ、何ですか?」
What is this?
Then you can keep going:
「どうやって使うんですか?」
How do you use it?
「音を聞いてもいいですか?」
May I hear what it sounds like?
「友達へのお土産を探しているんですが、おすすめはありますか?」
I’m looking for a souvenir for a friend. Is there anything you recommend?
Now you’re doing more than shopping. You’re learning about someone’s products, sharing your interests and having a conversation in Japanese.
📷 What catches your eye in this photo? Try writing one question you would ask the shopkeeper in Japanese!
In my lessons, we practice practical, everyday Japanese through photos like this, real situations and your own interests. You’ll get plenty of time to speak, with support when you need it.
