Why do you learn languages?

Nelson Mandela once said,"If you talk to a man in a language, that goes to his head.If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart."

Personally, I really appreciate this sentence. It reminds me of my original purpose of learning English, just out of my pure interest of learning it.But now,I am obsessed by more external factors. Here I am enlightened by Tim Doner'story ,he is a 17-year-old guy,who can speak more than 20 languages. His great achievement is closely related with his pure interest and perseverance.

So how about you?Do you agree with this sentence?

We have 11 official languages in South Africa, thanks to Mr Mandela.

Thank you for such a reminder of how fascinating language learning is in spite of continuous ups and downs it entails. I do agree with this beautiful statement and my own experience backs it up. The interaction I'm having with my language partners is what drifts me through thorny periods of my learning. This mere interest of knowing them better or helping them keeps me going. :)

Wow that sentence is exactly. Once, a Slovenian person came my country to travel. When I saw him and smile with him, he said "Hello" by my language. First it make me surprise, then I felt he is so friendly and close although he just can say "Hello" by my language.
