Monday - Moon Day

Tuesday - Tiu's Day

Wednesday - (W)oden's Day

Thursday - Thor's Day

Friday - Freya's Day

Saturday - Saturn's Day

Sunday - Sun Day

The Roman's named the days of the week after their gods, and when the Germanic peoples took the Roman calendar, they replaced the names of the Roman gods with the names of their Germanic gods e.g. "Mars" became "Tiu", "Mercury" became "Oden/Woden", "Jupiter" became "Thor" and "Venus" became "Freya". The names for "moon" and "sun" were translated literally for "Monday" and "Sunday". "Saturday" still preserves the name of the Roman god "Saturn" though.

"The seven-day week originates from the calendar of the Babylonians, which in turn is based on a Sumerian calendar dated to 21st-century B.C. Seven days corresponds to the time it takes for a moon to transition between each phase: full, waning half, new and waxing half. Because the moon cycle is 29.53 days long, the Babylonians would insert one or two days into the final week of each month."

Apparently it goes back to the Sumerians.

The common language at the time was Koine (Greek common dialect.) Didn't the ancient Babylonians use some sort of calendar 1000 years previously? or the Aramaic peoples?

Anthony, before the rise of Rome there were many different people in Italy. I remember that Etruscan people didn't have weeks, nor days. I don't remeber fot other people, like Phoenician or others.
