I agree with you both that we should communicate more openly with people from other cultures.  In the end we'll all gain more understanding and it will be more fun.  

Sometimes we'll say something that unintentionally hurts the other person because we don't know their culture.  But all we can do is try our best and apologize if they feel hurt by something, then move on.  It is said "From difficult beginnings, deeper friendships are formed."

I don't agree with you at all. It's true that there are a lot of difference between countries. However, in my particular case I try to be myself when talking with foreigners. At least, I try to do so with my knowledge of the language, because sometimes I don't know how to say something in a more informal way as I would do in my own country. Being original sometimes it's hard because of that.
