What's your favourite thing about learning languages?

Hi guys! I wanted to find out why some of you are here on italki and what is it that you like best about learning languages. Is it a way for you to find out more about a specific culture, is it because it's practical in the real world, or is it simply because it sounds cool?

Personally, I love the way foreign languages sound because each language is so different and it's just amazing to watch people converse so naturally in a language you find incredible to hear.

What do you guys think?

1) I get upset when people are talking and I don't understand, I feel isolated. So if too many people I know speak a language, I have to learn it.

2) Obviously, sometimes a language can help find a job.

3) Everyone has to speak English and so do I, but I don't really enjoy speaking English. I don't like the language as such, and I'm also not happy that we are all forced to speak it whether we like it or not. So I'm glad when I can speak another language instead. This is one of the reasons I've learned a few more languages.

4) I feel it is rude, disrespectful, and arrogant to expect people to speak English in a non English speaking country so I feel really ashamed every time I have to ask someone if they speak English.

I wouldn't just learn any language unless I have enough motivation for it and a goal, but I learn Japanese for a few reasons : Japan is one of the most developed countries in the world, also I feel like their writing is very unique. I got an interest for it from watching their animations and such similar stuff, and I also learn it because I want to study it at university in order to become a translator (or in another case an English teacher but I am not talking about this specific topic right now).

This one isn't a very important reason to me personally, but I kind of want to connect with other people too. The more languages I speak, the more people I can meet.

Have you ever felt something different when you speak other languages?  I feel like that I'm using the different parts of my brain from when I speak my own language. It's like something makes my brain flexible as well. So I feel relax and happy after speaking the other languages. This is my favorite thing about learning languages.

It turned out to be interesting to read why others learn different languages!)
As for me, I started learning English when I was 5 and it became my passion all at once. Then I learned French, Farsi, and now I'm learning Serbian and willing to learn Portuguese as well. For me, learning languages is a way to be closer to another cultures, people, to heighten my IQ, and just a possibility to learn many interesting things every day. And I simply adore this feeling when I come to another country and I can talk to the locals without using the translator.
