Creedance Clearwater Revival -

Hi,

There is this song by Creedence Clearwter Revival called UP AROUND THE BEND on which they sing:

Come on the rising Wind, we're goin' up around the bend

In this context what does it mean " to go up around the bend"?

The expression itself can be either around the bend of a river or around the bend in a road.  I was curious about which fit this song best so I searched for the lyrics and meaning.  Like most songs, native speakers disagree on the underlying meaning of the song.  If you read the comments on this thread http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/17169/ ; you can see that some speculate that this particular bend could have been California, where the band was from and that it may have been about simply getting away from the hassles of life or it may have been about avoiding the draft (the forced conscription into the military of an unpopular war.)

This song was written during the ¨hippie¨ movement in the US when young people had the reputation of being liberal, protesting the war, wearing peace signs, hanging out, wanting a lifestyle very different from their parents, and sometimes living in groups using alcohol and drugs.

The idiom ¨around the bend¨ can also mean going crazy or using drugs, which is what a lot of the older generation thought about that generation at the time.

Yeah bend in the river works too. I read through the lyrics and listened to the song a few times. It's really talking about going to a place where they can hang out and talk,  play music, and forget the troubles of the world.

The lyrics talk about a road. But I take it metaphorically.

"up around the bend" is referring to a road. So they are going around the bend in the road.
