These are phrasal verbs! A phrasal verb is a verb + an adverb or preposition. "Out" functions as an adverb. These phrases should be interpreted as a whole, rather than dissected into individual parts. They can be pretty tricky to learn. I think the best way to learn them is to listen for them, try to recognize them, and memorize what they mean.

Figure out: Understand/solve
Find out: Discover
Check it out: Look at this/it
Help me out: Help me

Your grammar book should have a section called phrasal verbs.  If you don't have a grammar book, I recommend Grammar in Use by Murphy.  It has two-page units which include one page of explanation and one page of practice exercises.  Some editions have answers in the back of the book.  The book can be used for learning and for review.

They are phrasal verbs: To figure out means: To understand.

To find out means to discover a fact.

His parents found out that he has a girlfriend.
