Korean say 발이 넓다 and it literally means "Feet are wide", and the real meaning is that "The range of where your feet step on, i,e. the range of your personal relationship, is wide".
So, if we say "저 친구는 발이 참 넓다", it doesn't mean "his/her physical size of feet are wide", but it means "He/she has lots of acquaintances and has very wide range of personal relationship".

In Russian we also have the expression "жить на широкую ногу" (lit. to live on a wide foot"), it means "to live in a grand style", i.e. to spend a lot of money or/and to live in luxury. Not exactly the same of course, but isn't it interesting that wide feet are used metaphorically in the languages that belong to different language families?)
In English, we say that he or she has a wide circle of friends, meaning, as you say, a large number of acquaintances, etc.
Ha! But my son does have wide feet, referring to the physical width of his feet. He has to buy shoes accordingly. :)
