How different is standard German (Hochdeutsch) vs. Austrian German?
I would like to visit Austria someday and I'm curious to know how different the type of German spoken there is from standard German (Hochdeutsch).
My experiences with German dialects have been pretty mixed so far. I was worried that in certain parts of Germany people would be speak a dialect that I do not understand. However, when I visited some of the big cities, it appeared that people spoke mostly Hochdeutsch.
On the other hand, it seems as though people from Switzerland do indeed speak a very different type of German than the one that is taught in schools. I have a friend who speaks the St. Gallen dialect and I could not understand any of her family members when they came to visit. They all had to do me a favor and speak Hochdeutsch for us to be able to communicate in German.
These experiences make me wonder what the language situation in Austria is like. Do people mostly speak Hochdeutsch or dialects? How different is Austrian German compared to standard German? Are the words and grammar different or is it mostly just an accent?
