Blocking someone & why it doesn't work
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but there is a serious design flaw with italki - and this is regarding the option to "block" someone.

When you block someone, they can't see your profile and they won't be able to message you. On the other hand, they can log out and still view your profile (if they have the link to your profile). Your profile also shows you when you were last online and there's no way to change this.

Now, I'm thinking about deleting this account permanently and starting a new account with nothing on my profile. I just think it's too bad that we have to worry about harassment and phishing scams on an educational website, such as this one.

Yes they can still see your profile and actually can still respond to your posts on the Discussion board. Especially if they haven't blocked you. There's some people that I've blocked and I can't actually respond to any of their discussion posts. Even if they are blocked from responding to your own posts they could still talk about you publically in other posts that they've created. So if someone is harassing you they could still publically talk about you on the Discussion board to other members which further exacerbates the 'clique/bully' mentality. Also reporting doesn't really do that much since people can always create a new account or even a separate account to spy on you. I've already reached out to support about this and they just say block and report.

If you get a new account and still post the same thoughts/opinions, people will eventually get the drift of who you are and will 'out' you. Trust me I've had that happen to me before on another social media site.

Skype: Remove them/block them.
Email: Have it so any emails from them are sent to the spam folder.
Italki: Just block/report. That's really all you can do.

Alice is right. It's easy to recognise other members by their style of writing and topics, even if they open new acounts. So, if someone is obsessed by you, they'll also find your new account.

The only way to stay "under the radar" here, is not to post at all in the community section as everything in the discussions, answers and notebook section is public. If you only take lessons, never post anything in the community section, don't allow friendship requests or direct messages, don't appear in the language partner search, don't leave public reviews for your teachers, set your lesson history and friends list to private and set your country and language to "other", then people won't be able to find you.

@Alice

I'm sorry that you had to go through that! I'm actually thinking about just getting a new account, so that I can continue scheduling my lessons. I really like my teachers (Russian/Spanish) and I'm lucky to have found them through this site.

@Miriam

I don't think this person will try to contact me again, but the whole experience was very unpleasant for me. I just want to make sure this person has no way of contacting me ever again. If someone doesn't understand your boundaries the first time, then you never know if this person really "got" the message or not.

I think when you block someone, they can still see your profile, even if they are logged in. They are only blocked from commenting on your discussions (but they can still read them), from up- and downvoting you and from sending you messages. If the person is harrassing you in such a strong way that you are even considering deleting you current account, you might want to report them to italki.
