Student recording a lesson
Hi, I've been learning for a while, as expected there are times when I have difficulty expressing myself, make a lot of mistakes etc. For these situations it would be good to get back to them, find out how should I express the same idea better, analyze my mistakes better etc. My problem is that right after the lesson I can't really recollect everything and I'm often mentally exhausted to do that anyway. Taking notes during the lessons seems like it would heavily break the flow.

So my solution would be to record the lessons and then review them later. Skype provides a call recording feature for this purpose.

Before I can do that I of course need to ask the teacher for permission and that's where I'm a little bit worried. Recording somebody sounds pretty bad and I'm worried it might be a turn off for the teacher. I will of course explain that I want to use the recording for the review purposes only.

So I'm curious if there are students who tried the same, also if there are teachers who got such requests - how did you handle it? What's your position on lesson recording?

Thanks.

I'm a teacher at university and I record the part of the lesson, where I do a presentation but in general I don't record my students. If I do so, I ask them first. I had language lessons with teachers who offered to record the lessons and send me the file but normally I wouldn't re-watch the lesson later. I do know though that some of my students do like to re-watch the lessons. There are teachers who are very open to be recorded, while others will absolutely refuse. If you want to be on the safe side, choose a teacher who also has a Youtube channel or publishes videos on another platform. They might be ok with recorded lessons.

I had a student who wanted to record the lesson. No problem, I just told him not to upload it somewhere on the net, just for private use.

There were several students who recorded the lessons, some asked person and some did not. I appreciate those who did. The thing is that recording the video can be a breach of one's privacy. Before you record a video on Skype, you will receive a notification about privacy issues. So, it is always best to ask permission. In my case, I allowed the students to record the class, except that i did tell them to ask permission first because some forgot.

It is a matter of being polite and courteous even if someone paid for the class, the recording is another thing. I am okay with it, provided that it is used for reviewing the lesson and not for something else. It is better to send a message to your teacher first and record only if they agree with it.

@Olga, yes, I would prefer this variant as well.

However, when doing video chat, Skype will record both audio & video. You can't selectively turn off video recording and keep audio only.

The only way for Skype to record audio only is to have audio chat but then teacher and student don't see each other which also isn't ideal.
