1. Don't pretend to understand when you don't.
2. Don't be shy to ask questions.
3. Don't be too sensitive about cultural or political issues.
4. be forgiving.

There are no simple ways. In terms of 'material' ways, it very much depends on where you are going, why and what your resources are. But regardless, once there, the most important aspect of adapting to a new country and a new culture is not to keep comparing where you are with where you come from. And that is often far from easy. And whilst having friends in your own expatriate community (if there is one) is important and often neccessary for ones sanity! It is also vital to emerse yourself as much and as quickly as possible in the local language, daily life and culture.
