In advancing vocabulary you have to pronounced correctly the words and expressions you meet daily.

then identify what part of speech each belongs to ...try to understand it (better associate it with pictures)

especially when you give its meaning...check your dictionary to find multiple meanings, place them in marginal notes (ex. dictate ( was read in Line 4 ),and try to learn words.

all the words and phrases you meet and used when you transmit to and received ideas from another person or heard show the extent of your word power.the wider your vocabulary, the easier it is for you to communicate and the greater the extent of your knowledge. here are ways in learning about vocabulary:

sight memorization, studying of structural clues, sound clues, contextual clues  and dictionary drills

i hope this helps a little. make a research of how this ways are put together. Goodluck!

People have different learning styles. Some people are visual, while others are auditory, kinesthetic or a combination of two or more styles.  What works for me might not work for you, but I hope I can help.

I use mobile applications that teach vocabulary items with flashcards. I can repeat the words as many times as I want and listen to how they are pronounced. After the app introduces a few words, it provides pictures or translations and you have to match them with the right words. The application I use is called Babbel. I don't know if it's available in other languages besides German. It's also very important to contexualize the words you learn. Any good dictionary will provide a few examples that show how each word is used. Another thing that could help is learning the meaning of the suffixes, prefixes or infixes in a word, because they sometimes suggest the meaning. For examples, the Latin root  "pre" that is found in many English words means "before." Therefore, it gives you an idea about the meaning of the words "precede," "previous," "preconceived," and "precaution" even if they're new to you.

Ever heard of vocabulary drills? It might be an old-fashioned method, but I used to use it in my classroom when I used to teach. It can be fun if you're in a group and if you're creative and introduce some games. I find it helpful when I make connections, learn synonyms and antonyms and repeat the words as many times as possible.

I think the best way to not forget the words is to use them often; either in writing or speaking. I also group the new words I learned into categories (food, travel, environment, politics, anatomy, etc) so that they are easy to find. Besides, the more you improve your writing, listening and speaking skills in the language you're learning, you find yourself encountering the words you learned over and over again.

Hi!
Simply read whatever you can reach in target langage (news, books, watch movies) and learn all the words you do not understand (with a good dictionary, of course).
